The Natural Step is pleased to be collaborating with Smart Urbanism London (SU:LDN),a new startup non-profit organisation jointly formed by the Useful Simple Trust, the Hub Network and Urban Initiatives.
Smart Urbanism is an emerging concept that is testing out new forms of collaboration to "challenge the status quo and bring about fundamental and meaningful change in the ‘melting pot’ of urbanism, sustainability and innovation".
SU:LDN aims to build a world-class [LEARNING, DOING and INFLUENCING] institution for London as part of a global network that brings together new ideas with action-based research and development in the planning, design and delivery of sustainable urbanism and social innovation in our cities, towns and their LOCALITIES [districts, neighbourhoods and quarters].
Our collaboration is exploring how the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development promoted by The Natural Step can be systematically applied to city systems. The collaboration will draw on 20 plus years of experience applying the Framework to communities as diverse as Dublin, Ireland, Morbegno Italy, to pioneers like Whistler and others across Canada, and municipality networks in Sweden and across North America, to a growing number of municipalities in New Zealand and beyond.
In addition, by participating in a growing international research alliance using the Framework, Real Change, and drawing on insights from projects like CONVERGE, we are hoping to connect the brightest minds with both an operating system and shared language to speed up collaboration and action on smart urbanism.
The collaboration is off to a great start with support from three highly committed post-graduate students at Blekinge Institute who are using the Framework to conduct research and provide advice on open, collaborative organisational structures and management approaches for SU:LDN.
Stay tuned!
