About Us

THE NATURAL STEP CANADA  is a dynamic non-profit organization with over a decade of experience helping organizations and individuals understand and make meaningful progress toward sustainability.

WE ENVISION… a sustainable world in which individuals, communities, and businesses thrive within nature’s limits.

WE STRIVE… to inspire, educate, and connect Canadian leaders to accelerate the transformation toward a sustainable world.

Founded in 1989 by Dr. Karl-Henrik Robèrt in Sweden, The Natural Step has grown to have projects in 18 countries and a list of partners that includes some of the world’s leading brands.

For two decades, The Natural Step has been at the forefront of international research and dialogue about sustainable development. We have developed a proven, science based model that helps communities and businesses better understand and integrate environmental, social, and economic considerations.

In working with hundreds of companies, municipalities, academic institutions and not-for-profit organizations all over the world, we’ve proven time and again that sustainable decision-making leads to new opportunities, reduced costs, and dramatically reduced ecological and social impacts.

Over the years we have received a number of awards including: Mikhail Gorbachev’s Millennium Award in 1999, The Blue Planet Award in 2000 (considered the “Nobel Prize of the Environment”), and in 2005, Dr. Robèrt was honoured with the first Laureate Medal for Social Responsibility issued by the new Global Centre for Leadership and Business Ethics. In 2006, our eLearning course was awarded the Brandon Hall Silver Medal for Excellence in Learning, and in 2007 The Natural Step was short-listed for the prestigious Alcan Prize for Sustainability.

The Natural Step is committed to researching the science of sustainability and linking it to real world applications. We work with people inside organizations to make informed decisions and create dialogue about the many challenges and opportunities ahead as we move toward a sustainable future.
