Visions for Vinyl

What's the future of PVC? In an industry often under attack over environmental and health concerns, answering this question is top of mind.

The Natural Step Framework has helped some of the most proactive companies in this industry set their visions for the future and make strategic choices to get there. Its been used previously to lay out key challenges for the industry and we've even used it to bring a whole supply chain together in an industry course. Now there is an opportunity for the industry, as a whole, to apply it to define a shared vision, to take a full and honest look at today's challenges and to make proactive steps on the journey toward sustainable management of materials.

Over the last quarter, The Natural Step has been collaborating with Vinyl 2010 – the European PVC industry’s voluntary commitment on sustainable development. The ten year programme is coming to an end and TNS is now advising on the development of a new ten year programme that should take the vinyl industry further towards sustainability.

To date a series of workshops have been run to define a long-term vision for the industry and a set of principles to guide the initiative. The challenges of PVC have also been explored and a programme of actions is now taking form for how the initiative will help the industry to resolve those challenges. During the coming period Vinyl 2010 will work further with the industry to develop a bold and concrete plan for the programme and engage with external stakeholders to get input and feedback on its’ plans. The new programme should be launched towards the end of the first quarter of 2011.
